About Merry Poppets

Senior Personnel

Mrs. Jane Laycock and Mrs. Michelle McFadden

We are both qualified Nursery Nurses and have worked in a small lower school with an age range from 3 to 9 years. Before having our own children we have worked in other nursery settings, as a private nanny, experience with playgroups and crèches. During this time we have gained valuable insight into the early stages of child development and the benefits of encouraging children to become independent learners.

We have a huge amount of experience in Lower School education and as you will notice from our experience, we have undertaken further education courses to better our knowledge.

Mrs. Laycock has two children and Mrs. McFadden has three. We have taken an active part in our children’s education by being on the committee for both playgroup and school. Mrs. Laycock has been on the board of Governors for the local lower school as well as PTA Chairperson, and PTA member for a local Middle School. We have both been involved in our childrens’ out of school interests; running Netball, Football matches as well as Rounders clubs.

We have also taken classes of children on three-day residential trips having co-ordinated the whole excursion. This involved close contact with parent, liaising with the venue and being part of the risk assessments and planning stages for taking the children away.

We have had a great deal of experience with outside agencies regarding children we have taught, and have liaised with school services, child protection, EBD and speech therapy advisors.

Our previous positions within the Lower School involved planning and organising the daily running of classes, assisting individual and whole class learning, always ensuring learning intentions are understood and shared with the children. We have worked with class teachers to develop and revise planning and evaluation pro formas.

Working in any lower school requires adaptability and teamwork. We have undertaken various tasks when staff have been taken ill this included: teaching whole classes, cooking for over 100 children, covering lunchtime supervisors and maintaining good hygiene standards.

As Senior Teaching Assistant Mrs Laycock has worked with other members of staff throughout all age phases, working with individual groups, whole classes and training new members of staff. She has co-ordinated a new Special Needs programme which ensures continuity of information (as highlighted in the recent OFSTED inspection for this school) helping new members of staff reliably assess children’s needs.

We liaise closely with Central Bedfordshire Children Services at Priory House, Chicksands, however if you would like any further advice about ourselves you can obtain this from Children Services on telephone number 0300 300 8000.
